Mental health has always been an important subject in my life and as I have gotten older I have only continued to learn how the human mind functions. My fascination in psychology is after all what led me to the career path I'm in and I am always deeply interested in learning how such miniscule things can have long-term effects on someone. This book was recommended by someone close to my heart and I must say that I now recommend this book to people and I'll tell you why.
Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, is a practice used to help individuals with their specific issues by connecting actions with thoughts. That's where the words "cognitive" and "behavioral" come from. Now, the one thing I must preface before going any further is that nothing involving the mind is fast. The process is slow but extremely worthwhile. Better understanding your mind will lead to a happier, fulfilling life. Often times we wonder why we think the things we do and this is where CBT can help as some of the strategies in this book help you discover the root of your thoughts. By understanding why you think the things you do, you can then begin actively addressing it to your desired goal. Let me give you a quick example:
John Doe is afraid of heights but he cannot figure out why as he has never gotten injured from a fall or have even been close to that occurring. After using some CBT practices, he realized that he is not necessarily afraid of heights. His thought process is actually (from end to start): afraid of heights because he does not want to die because he is worried about what will happen to his family once he is gone because growing up he did not having a loving household and therefore wants to create that for his family. This is what CBT practices can help you realize; powerful, I know.
Once you have a grasp on the roots of your thoughts, you can then begin implementing actions in order to reach your goals. I have began to do this in my personal life and I have already seen positive progress.
Overall, I recommend giving this book as a try because I truly believe that nurturing your mind can have a ripple effect on your entire life in a positive way. If we want to care for others, we must first learn how to properly care for yourself.
Step away from the screen, take a walk, and appreciate all that life has to offer.
